The Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC) will hold its Open Days from 12 to 14 November as part of the 2025 Science Week. Over three days, the centre will offer free activities for students and the general public to showcase the international research being carried out in the fields of marine, freshwater, and theoretical ecology.

In the mornings, from 12 to 14 November, students from local schools will take part in three scientific tours around the CEAB facilities, guided by researchers from the centre’s various teams. The tours will include:

  • Forests under the sea. Participants will discover what marine forests are and what roles they play, comparing them with terrestrial forests to understand their importance for biodiversity and climate. They will also learn how research contributes to the conservation of these key ecosystems on our planet.

  • High-mountain lakes: science for their conservation. A tour designed to understand how the introduction of species affects high-mountain ecosystems, and how science studies the consequences and proposes actions to preserve these unique and fragile environments.

  • Tracking mosquitoes: a challenge for science. In this activity, students will learn how mosquitoes are studied and why this research is essential for global health. They will also discover how citizens can collaborate with research teams.

In the afternoons of 13 and 14 November, the Centre will be open to the general public:

  • On Thursday 13 at 6 p.m., a participatory workshop on climate change and planetary health will take place, organised within the framework of the European project IDAlert. Participants will collectively explore how human, animal, and environmental health are interconnected (One Health perspective). The activity is aimed at those aged sixteen and over.

  • On Friday 14 at 7 p.m., visitors will be able to enjoy a guided tour of the CEAB laboratories and other facilities, discovering where and how the centre’s research teams work. This visit is open to people of all ages.

All activities are free of charge. More information and registration are available on this link.

The Open Days are part of Science Week 2025, an initiative that brings research institutions together every year to make science accessible to the public and highlight the importance of scientific knowledge in addressing today’s major environmental and social challenges.
