Benthic ecosystem functioning
Responsable: Ballesteros Sagarra, Enric
The goal of our group is to understand patterns and processes underlying the structure and functioning of the marine benthos at multiple temporal and spatial scales and at different environmental situations. Our group combines descriptive field ecology and natural history with experimental and modelling approaches in order to understand functional drivers of species, communities and ecosystems. In addition, we work to determine how benthic ecosystems may be influenced by human alterations at local, regional and global scales. The main ecosystems studied are shallow rocky bottoms and seagrass meadows in a wide range of geographical areas: Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans and Gulf of California and Caribbean Sea.
