Innovation and transfer
Public sector and third sector
Collaboration with national and international public bodies, as well as with non-profit entities, in various areas such as the early detection and monitoring of invasive species, the monitoring of global change and its effects on different aquatic ecosystems, providing maps of the current situation and predictive models to manage public health issues, such as preventing the transmission of disease, managing water quality or applying validated techniques for the conservation and/or restoration of both marine and freshwater ecosystems.
Private sector
Several research groups collaborate with the private sector on initiatives focused on the conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems, including coastal and marine areas as well as freshwater bodies. In this regard, it is worth highlighting the collaboration in the protection and restoration of wetlands, lakes and ponds, rivers, coastal areas, and marine ecosystems, such as seagrass beds or macroalgae. It is also worth noting the existence of knowledge transfer to the biomedical sector for the development of (for example) new drugs as alternatives to drugs to which resistance has been developed, or in order to produce more efficient probiotics.
Others
Public-private collaboration is also frequent. It takes place, for example, in our unique research facilities, such as the Urban River Lab, where public bodies, researchers and companies join forces to find nature-based solutions that foster the better management, conservation and restoration of rivers that have been highly modified by human pressure.
