L’Espai Medes is organising three free evening events combining live music and documentary screenings, in collaboration with the European RESMED+ project, CEAB-CSIC, and a range of professionals linked to marine research and maritime culture.
This August, L’Espai Medes is bringing back one of its most distinctive cultural initiatives: Sea Nights, a series of three free events that will transform the port of L’Estartit into a meeting place for science, public outreach, culture and music.
Over three consecutive Tuesdays, audiences will be able to enjoy a concert and two documentary screenings, all centred around the sea. The aim of the programme is to bring scientific and environmental knowledge closer to the public through cultural and experiential formats, while reinforcing the role of L’Espai Medes as the marine interpretation centre of the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park.
The programme will begin on Tuesday 4 August with Songs from Land and Sea with an Empordà Accent, a musical performance by David de la Higuera and Margarida Joanmíquel, featuring traditional songs linked to the sea and the local area.
On Tuesday 11 August, the focus will shift to science with the premiere of the documentary A Sea Without Borders, dedicated to the European RESMED+ project led by the University of Barcelona. The film shows how research into fish movements helps us understand the connectivity between habitats, species and territories across the Mediterranean, highlighting the need for shared management strategies to conserve marine biodiversity.
The series will conclude on Tuesday 18 August with a screening of Memories of a Sea, a documentary by Laura Carrau Pascual that follows a scientific expedition to Kazakhstan led by CEAB-CSIC researchers Núria Catalán and Rafael Marcé. The team travelled to study the Aral Sea, one of the most striking examples of environmental degradation caused by poor water resource management. This event is organised in collaboration with the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC).
Through this initiative, L’Espai Medes is promoting a programme that goes beyond summer leisure activities, inviting audiences to reflect on the relationship between people and the marine environment while bringing together scientific knowledge and the cultural expressions connected to it.
All events will take place at 10.00 pm in the amphitheatre of L’Espai Medes, at the port of L’Estartit. Admission is free and no advance booking is required.
