When Freshwater Turns Salty

Series: Monday Science. Science for Policy

01/06/2026
Conference: “When Freshwater Turns Salty: Causes, Implications and Challenges for the Management of Aquatic Ecosystems”.
By: Dr. Eugènia Martí (CEAB-CSIC)
Venue: Amphitheatre Residència d’Investigadors (Barcelona)
Time: 18:00

This event will address the salinization of inland aquatic ecosystems. The increase in salinity in these ecosystems, caused by various human activities, is an environmental problem that is not widely known, despite being widespread. The talk will discuss the causes of salinization, with particular emphasis on urban activity. It will also present its consequences for both water quality and the biology of aquatic ecosystems. Finally, possible strategies that may help mitigate this problem will be discussed.

Eugènia Martí is a Research Professor at the CSIC and currently Deputy Director of the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC). Her research focuses on river ecology, particularly on examining the biogeochemical processes that regulate nutrient cycling and the effects of human activity on the functioning of river ecosystems. She has worked extensively on Mediterranean rivers and leads the Urban River Lab, an experimental platform dedicated to the study of urban rivers and ways to mitigate the impact of treated urban wastewater on receiving rivers.
