Title: “Sky-island floras: natural laboratories of evolution and biogeography“
Eastern Africa’s Afromontane and Afroalpine “sky islands” are isolated mountain ecosystems that provide a natural laboratory for studying evolution, diversification and adaptation. Using genomics and other approaches, this talk explores evolutionary relationships, species boundaries, and the processes that have generated biodiversity across these island-like landscapes.
Ponent: Cristina Roquet (IBB-CSIC)
Evolutionary biologist and botanist specializing in plant evolution, biogeography, phylogenomics, and biodiversity research, with a particular focus on Alpine and Mediterranean flora. She has held research positions at the Institut Botànic de Barcelona (CSIC-ICUB) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), and previously worked at the Laboratoire d’Écologie Alpine (CNRS, Grenoble). Her work includes prominent collaborations with biodiversity researchers Dr. Wilfried Thuiller and Dr. Sébastien Lavergne, contributing to international studies on plant diversity, evolution, and the impacts of climate change on biodiversity
It is open to people outside the Centre and will be followed by an informal opportunity to chat with the researcher.
