{"id":13835,"date":"2024-10-01T11:15:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-01T09:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/recerca-per-a-una-eolica-marina-compatible-amb-la-proteccio-de-la-biodiversitat\/"},"modified":"2024-10-01T09:10:44","modified_gmt":"2024-10-01T07:10:44","slug":"recerca-per-a-una-eolica-marina-compatible-amb-la-proteccio-de-la-biodiversitat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/en\/recerca-per-a-una-eolica-marina-compatible-amb-la-proteccio-de-la-biodiversitat\/","title":{"rendered":"Research for offshore wind compatible with the protection of biodiversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The Institut de Ci\u00e8ncies del Mar (ICM-CSIC), the Centre d\u2019Estudis Avan\u00e7ats de Blanes (CEAB-CSIC) and the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya (UPC) participate to a new innovative project led by the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/101156861\">NiD4OCEAN<\/a>, that addresses a crucial global challenge: how to expand offshore renewable energy while protecting marine biodiversity.<\/h4>\n<p>This three-year project, funded under Horizon Europe\u2019s \u2018Restore our Ocean and Waters\u2019 mission, unites 13 partners from 8 countries and will run from until 2027, with a budget of more than 2 million euros.<\/p>\n<p>The project targets the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and <strong>Western Mediterranean<\/strong> as case studies, with the aim of advancing the knowledge on<strong> nature-inclusive designs<\/strong> (NID) <strong>and nature-based solutions<\/strong> (NBS) for offshore renewable infrastructure. NIDs refers to options that can be integrated into, or added to, the design of an anthropogenic structure with the aim of enhancing ecological functioning, whereas NBS are tools to leverage nature and the power of healthy ecosystems to protect people, optimise infrastructure and safeguard a stable and biodiverse future.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13828 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NIVA_FINAL_27.01.2023-AI_BOTH-01-01-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"463\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NIVA_FINAL_27.01.2023-AI_BOTH-01-01-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NIVA_FINAL_27.01.2023-AI_BOTH-01-01-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NIVA_FINAL_27.01.2023-AI_BOTH-01-01-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NIVA_FINAL_27.01.2023-AI_BOTH-01-01-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NIVA_FINAL_27.01.2023-AI_BOTH-01-01-2048x1152.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 463px) 100vw, 463px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>project involves 13 partners<\/strong> from Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Portugal, and the UK, representing research institutes, universities, environmental NGOs, non-profit organizations and the energy industry. The CSIC team is composed of marine biologists, oceanographers and socioecologists from the Institut de Ci\u00e8ncies del Mar (ICM-CSIC) and the Centre d\u2019Estudis Avan\u00e7ats de Blanes (CEAB-CSIC), whereas the UPC incorporates engineers with expertise in offshore energy systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The expansion of offshore renewables, which are needed to meet the ambitious decarbonization objectives of the European Union, should not conflict with <strong>biodiversity preservation<\/strong> goals, such as the EU&#8217;s biodiversity strategy for 2030<\/em>\u201d states the ICM-CSIC researcher Josep Lloret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>This expansion should neither be detrimental to the livelihoods of local communities, who may be negatively impacted by the offshore energy projects<\/em>\u201d, points out the CEAB-CSIC researcher Rafael Sard\u00e0, who adds that \u201c<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/es\/proyectos-investigacion\/nature-inclusive-designs-for-reconciling-offshore-renewables-with-ocean-protection-nid4ocean\/\">NiD4OCEAN<\/a> will allow us to dive into the emerging field of nature-inclusive designs for offshore renewables<\/strong>, particularly for offshore wind, exploring their effectivity and applicability to different European ecoregions<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to Lloret and Sard\u00e1, \u201c<em>First, offshore wind farm plans and projects should avoid areas of high biodiversity value through meticulous marine and maritime spatial planning. Second, after these sensitive areas have been excluded from energy developments, NID (nature-inclusive designs) should be explored to avoid and minimize the ecological and socioeconomic impacts that still may appear<\/em>\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the CSIC will foster the co-creation of novel designs through the Innovation Challenge Series in collaboration with engineers of the UPC.\u00a0 \u201c<em>It is very important to incorporate the view of new generations that have been educated within the transdisciplinary environment. They can provide new and innovative solutions<\/em>\u201d, says Anna Mujal-Colilles, from the UPC.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, through transdisciplinary collaboration, <strong>the project will provide practical, context-specific solutions<\/strong> for policymakers, industry leaders, and marine managers.
