The research estimates that their degradation and loss could release around 26 tonnes of this metal globally each year, highlights the associated risks, and identifies the regions of the world facing the greatest threat.

The research, published in Earth-Science Reviews, was carried out by an international team that includes researchers from the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC). The study highlights a largely overlooked aspect of salt marshes, seagrass meadows and mangroves: their ability to retain persistent pollutants for centuries, or even millennia. Many of these pollutants originate from past human activities, including heavy metals that have accumulated in coastal sediments and may be released back into the water—with all the consequences this entails—if these ecosystems are degraded, eroded, disturbed or disappear altogether.

The study estimates that, as a direct result of their degradation and loss, these ecosystems release around 26 tonnes of mercury worldwide every year.

Published under the title “Risks of Mercury Release from Disturbance of Blue Carbon Ecosystems”, the study reviews current knowledge on how coastal sediments store mercury and other heavy metals, and how these pollutants can be remobilised when ecosystems are disturbed by human activities or extreme climatic events. The disturbances analysed include dredging, bottom trawling, coastal urbanisation and development, oil spills, storms, floods, droughts and marine heatwaves. The study also shows that blue carbon ecosystems act as natural filters and pollution traps, accumulating around 16 tonnes of mercury globally each year.

“For years, we have highlighted the role of these ecosystems as allies in tackling climate change because they capture carbon dioxide and store it as carbon for centuries or even millennia. This study provides yet another reason—adding to the many we already had—to conserve and restore them: they keep pollutants such as mercury locked away in coastal sediments, preventing them from re-entering the environment if those sediments are destroyed or disturbed,” says researcher Òscar Serrano, co-author of the paper and director of the GAME research group at CEAB-CSIC.

Mercury is a pollutant of global concern. Under certain environmental conditions, part of it can be transformed into methylmercury, an even more toxic and bioavailable form that accumulates throughout marine food webs and can ultimately reach humans through the consumption of fish and shellfish. However, the paper stresses that not all mercury released is automatically converted into methylmercury. This process depends on local factors, including the chemical conditions of the sediment, the availability of organic matter and microbial activity.

To produce these estimates, the authors analysed previous studies of coastal sediments subjected to physical disturbances such as dredging, erosion, storms and human activities that disturb the seabed. According to this analysis, such disturbances can mobilise, on average, around 54% of the metals retained in sediments, although this figure varies considerably depending on sediment type, the intensity of the disturbance and environmental conditions. In blue carbon ecosystems, the loss of vegetation and sediment erosion can transform habitats that normally function as sinks for pollutants into secondary sources of contamination.

The study also identifies regions where the risk is particularly high due to the combination of large mercury stocks, intense human pressure, exposure to extreme climatic events and dependence on fisheries. Priority areas include East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, and several Pacific island subregions.

Beyond the global estimate, the authors highlight a mechanism that has received little attention to date: amplification through compound disturbances. In other words, the combined effect of several impacts may be greater than the sum of each one individually. For example, drought may oxidise sediments and weaken their ability to retain mercury, so that a subsequent storm releases more contaminants than it would if the ecosystem had remained intact.

“The message is clear: conserving these ecosystems cannot be separated from climate action or from reducing the other human pressures that degrade them. When these pressures occur simultaneously, their effects can reinforce one another and produce impacts greater than those caused by each pressure in isolation,” says Òscar Serrano. “Protecting and restoring mangroves, salt marshes and seagrass meadows is therefore a climate action, a way to reduce environmental risks and, clearly, a key measure for safeguarding biodiversity, coastlines, fisheries and, ultimately, the livelihoods of many coastal communities,” he adds.

The study proposes integrating this perspective into coastal management policies and international mercury control frameworks, such as the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

Article reference: Fan Zhang, Jingrou Hu, Ana Carolina Ruiz-Fernández, Christian J.
