However, increasing human activities and the effects of global change are gradually weakening this natural protection.

In this context, an international study led by the Blanes Centre for Advanced Studies (CEAB-CSIC) has detected an unexpected diversity of parasites in the stomachs of Antarctic fish. Among them are marine microorganisms belonging to the genera Bonamia, Minchinia, Haplosporidium, Hematodinium, Gadixcellia and Ichthyophonus, groups with a wide geographical distribution that include species responsible for significant diseases affecting fish, crustaceans and molluscs of ecological and commercial importance. The findings reveal that these microorganisms form part of the biodiversity present within Antarctic food webs and reinforce the need to understand their impact on these ecosystems under pressure from global change.

The research, published in the journal Environmental DNA, identified 242 molecular signals of parasites through the analysis of the stomach contents of two Antarctic fish species. It significantly expands current knowledge of the marine parasitic biodiversity of the White Continent, particularly regarding microscopic protists and other eukaryotes, a group that has so far received little attention in Antarctic waters.

The results also show that parasites are not randomly distributed: many appear to be associated with specific organisms in the fishes’ diet. Because stomach contents contain DNA from both parasites and consumed prey, the team was able to compare the abundance of individual parasites with that of their potential hosts, particularly molluscs and crustaceans that form part of the fishes’ diet, in order to identify consistent associations across the analysed samples. This analysis enabled the researchers to propose specific potential associations between detected parasites and local host species that have not previously been described in Antarctica.

“The most surprising finding is the strong and recurring molecular signal of these parasites associated with molluscs and crustaceans in many fish captured at different depths and from both species. This indicates that these parasites are integrated into the food web of the Antarctic marine ecosystem,” explains Elisabet Alacid, CEAB-CSIC researcher and lead author of the study.

The researchers stress that detecting the DNA of these microorganisms does not necessarily mean that they are causing disease, although it does point to potential risks. They also emphasise that this research substantially expands knowledge of a biodiversity that had previously remained hidden.

Environmental DNA: a tool for detecting hidden biodiversity

The discovery was made possible through DNA metabarcoding techniques, which allow hundreds of organisms to be identified from microscopic traces of DNA contained within a single sample. Since the two fish species analysed have a broad benthopelagic diet, feeding on both seabed-dwelling organisms and species living in the water column, the contents of their stomachs reflect both their own exposure to parasites and that of the organisms they consume. In this study, the researchers used the fish as “natural samplers” of local ecosystem diversity: by analysing stomach contents they were able not only to identify parasites present within the surrounding food web, but also their potential hosts among the organisms consumed.

This approach makes it possible to detect microscopic organisms that are extremely difficult to observe using traditional methods, providing a much more comprehensive picture of marine biodiversity. At the same time, it establishes a baseline that will help identify future changes driven by global change or by the introduction of new species.

An ecosystem in transition

Antarctica remains one of the most remote regions on Earth, yet the effects of global change are already visible. Increasing maritime traffic, scientific expeditions, tourism and other human activities are creating more opportunities for non-native organisms to reach and establish themselves on the continent. At the same time, the accelerated warming of the Antarctic Peninsula is reducing some of the environmental barriers that have until now limited the survival of many species.

The study’s authors note that these processes may facilitate the arrival of both new organisms and their parasites. For this reason, it is essential to have tools capable of detecting such changes at an early stage and helping to manage them before they have consequences for marine life.

REF.ART.: Ruiz, M.
