A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0269749121000294#!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> led by <strong>Martin Dahl<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.su.se\/cmlink\/stockholm-university\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Stockholm<\/a>, in collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/game-csic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Group of Ecology of Aquatic Macrophytes<\/a> (GAME) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Advanced Studies of Blanes<\/a> (CEAB-CSIC), has analyzed the presence of microplastics in sediments of marine prairies of <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em> over the past century. <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em> is an exclusive marine plant of the Mediterranean Sea known to efficiently trap organic and inorganic particles and bury them in its sediments for millennia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large XcVN5d tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traducci\u00f3n\"><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Sediment soundings were carried out in two prairies near El Ejido, off the coasts of Aguamarga and Roquetas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large XcVN5d tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traducci\u00f3n\"><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Almeria is known for its intense agricultural industry with 30,000 ha of greenhouses covered with plastic. The results of the study show unequivocally how the contamination and accumulation of microplastics was negligible until the mid-1970s, to subsequently increase dramatically.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51840\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51841 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ceab.csic.es\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/plasticos-invernaderos.png\" alt=\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Partial aerial view of the Plastic Sea of \u200b\u200bEl Ejido, Almer\u00eda, in January 2019. Source: Aquatic Macrophyte Ecology Group.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large XcVN5d tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traducci\u00f3n\"><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">&#8220;The concentration of microplastics in the Posidonia of Roquetas de Mar began to increase with the massive installation of greenhouses in the area, and we have a very high time coincidence. Microplastics are dangerous for the food chain, and we we eat through fish, \u201dexplains <strong>Nerea Pi\u00f1eiro-Juncal<\/strong>, a specialist in marine soil biogeochemistry at GAME-CEAB.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large XcVN5d tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traducci\u00f3n\"><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">As a control, a third sediment survey was carried out on the ground of a <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em> meadow of the integral reserve in the National Park of the Cabrera Archipelago, in the south of Mallorca. The number of plastic microparticles of less than five millimeters in each kilo of sediment in Cabrera ranged between 68 and 362, however, in Roquetas soared to 2,173, about 30 times more, evidencing the impact of the fruit and vegetable industry in marine pollution by microplastics.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large XcVN5d tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traducci\u00f3n\"><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">&#8220;We began to know some of the consequences of the presence of microplastics in the marine environment, but many of them are being studied or have not yet been identified. Regardless of these possible consequences, the study of the dynamics of microplastics in ecosystems serves as a tracer of human activity and how the waste we generate reach the most remote corners of our planet. Once again, <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em> has shown its enormous potential as a witness and as part of the solution to the excesses of disproportionate humanization, &#8220;concludes <strong>Miguel \u00c1ngel Mateo M\u00ednguez<\/strong>, head of the Aquatic Macrophytes Ecology Group.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large XcVN5d tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traducci\u00f3n\"><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">The scientific study was cited in an <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/clima-y-medio-ambiente\/2021-09-04\/de-los-invernaderos-al-fondo-del-mar-la-plaga-del-plastico-agricola-en-almeria.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> published last Saturday, September 4 in the newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Pa\u00eds<\/a>. This is a very complete and in turn vindictive report in which the problem of agricultural plastics in Almeria is illustrated and highlighted.
