On February 27 and 28, 2023, the Center for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC) hosted the first kick-off meeting of the new E4Warning Project coordinated and led by Dr. Frederic Bartumeus<\/strong> of the department of theoretical ecology of the CEAB.<\/p>\n

The meeting was attended by practically all the institutions that make up the project consortium, the main researchers, the people who lead the different working groups and also, with practically all the people who participate in the project. We have also had the pleasure of having the project advisor, Erwin Goor from the European Research Executive Agency (REA).<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\"<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Eco-Epidemiological Intelligence for Early Warning\u00a0and response to Mosquito-borne disease risk in Endemic and Emergence Settings<\/h3>\n

E4Warning is an holistic approach to improve our\u00a0understanding of the interplay between humans, mosquitoes,\u00a0reservoir species and the environment for a better\u00a0disease intelligence capable of anticipating and identifying\u00a0mosquito-borne diseases epidemic risk and outbreaks.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"<\/p>\n

Mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya and West Nile fever, are emerging and re-emerging\u00a0worldwide because of climate change and globalisation. Every year,\u00a0an estimated 390 million dengue infections occur around the world, resulting in up to 36,000 deaths. The burden of these diseases is highest in tropical and subtropical areas, but increasing numbers of autochthonous case are being reported from European countries since 2010, raising concerns about\u00a0the potential for the establishment of these pathogens in temperate regions.<\/p>\n

The E4Warning consortium<\/strong> involves 12 organisations from Spain, Greece, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and UK<\/h3>\n

The consortium is high complementary in expertise and disciplinary backgrounds, including entomology, movement ecology, epidemiology, Earth Observation, sensors engineering, citizen science expertise, and spatial statistical modelling.<\/p>\n

The methodologies will follow an open innovation model, including both public and private R&I, and stakeholders and citizenship following a Quadruple Helix (QH) model.<\/p>\n
