and their ecosystems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f703001 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f703001\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>Its main activities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improving the understanding of marine sponge diversity and distribution<\/li>\n<li>Creating new monitoring tools for sponge habitats<\/li>\n<li>Increasing knowledge of the threats that marine sponges are facing<\/li>\n<li>Developing effective conservation measures to protect restore marine sponges<\/li>\n<li>Contributing to the implementation of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/strategy\/biodiversity-strategy-2030_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>SponBIODIV\u200b\u2019s\u200b main goal is to establish a sponge diversity and distribution baseline knowledge, as well as delivering tools to improve management and conservation of sponges across the Atlantic and Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, this project will aim to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify bio and phylodiversity hotspots of sponge and sponge habitats across the Atlantic and Mediterranean, by compiling the most comprehensive dataset of sponges of this region.<\/li>\n<li>Establish ecological\/genetic corridors and refugia areas between species and regions, combining biophysical modelling and population genomic approaches.<\/li>\n<li>Develop new methodologies for wider biodiversity detection and monitoring of sponge habitats by harnessing the potential of \u200beDNA and \u200bsponges as natural samplers \u200bof eDNA. \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Assess the current conservation status of species and habitats in line with major international processes.<\/li>\n<li>\u200b\u200bEngage relevant stakeholders for co-production and co-delivery of data and practical tools to inform management, conservation, and restoration\u200b actions\u200b.\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/li>\n<li>\u200b\u200b\u200bRaise public awareness of the importance of sponge species and habitats. \u200b<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-026bae2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"026bae2\"
