The Dengue Risk Investigation for Preparedness (DengRIP)<\/strong> project, funded by NIHR<\/strong>, is led by Dr. David Weetman<\/strong> (LSTM) and Prof. Athanase Badolo<\/strong> (Ki-Zerbo University, Burkina Faso). The project aims to confront the growing threat of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika in Ouagadougou<\/strong>, as a model for West Africa, where Aedes aegypti<\/em>, the main vector, thrives in urban environments. With no effective vaccines or treatments for many arboviral diseases, vector control<\/strong> remains the best protection. The global resurgence of dengue is driven by urbanization, globalization, and ineffective vector control, and Burkina Faso has been identified as a transmission hotspot. DengRIP<\/strong> focuses on community-based vector surveillance<\/strong>, control<\/strong>, and risk prediction<\/strong> to improve outbreak preparedness.<\/p>\n

The project will develop an improved arbovirus risk index<\/strong> by modelling Ae. aegypti<\/em> abundance, distribution, and behavior. Data will be collected on mosquito genetics<\/strong>, human exposure<\/strong>, and environmental factors<\/strong>. A community-based surveillance system using the Mosquito Alert mobile app<\/strong> will allow citizens to report mosquito activity, cross-validated with traditional monitoring methods. In addition, DengRIP<\/strong> will test several vector control methods<\/strong>, including larval source management, indoor residual spraying, attractive toxic sugar baits, and volatile pyrethroid emanators.<\/p>\n

DengRIP<\/strong> is a multi-country collaboration<\/strong>, involving the Universit\u00e9 Joseph Ki-Zerbo<\/strong> and the Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Sant\u00e9<\/strong> in Burkina Faso, and northern partners including the University of Oxford<\/strong> (UK), the Institut de Recherche pour le D\u00e9veloppement<\/strong> (France), the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient\u00edficas<\/strong> (Spain), and the University of Glasgow<\/strong> (UK).<\/p>\n

The project places strong emphasis on local capacity building<\/strong>, ensuring that local scientists gain expertise in entomology, social science, genetics, and epidemiology. Community engagement<\/strong> is key, as local involvement is essential for effective surveillance and control.
