Adem\u00e1s, las esponjas, por situarse en la base de la filogenia animal, tienen genomas de enorme potencial informativo para entender el origen y los primeros pasos evolutivos de los procesos biol\u00f3gicos y sistemas de \u00f3rganos que caracterizan a los animales.<\/p>\n<p>Las esponjas tambi\u00e9n tienen la peculiaridad de que son los \u00fanicos animales que tiene esqueletos de s\u00edlice (SiO2), un compuesto con id\u00e9ntica f\u00f3rmula qu\u00edmica que el vidrio de nuestras ventanas, pero producido por un proceso biol\u00f3gico y denominado s\u00edlice biog\u00e9nica. La s\u00edlice del esqueleto de las esponjas se ha revelado en las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas como un material de notable inter\u00e9s biol\u00f3gico y ecol\u00f3gico, pero tambi\u00e9n tecnol\u00f3gico, particularmente en los campos de microelectr\u00f3nica, fot\u00f3nica y biomedicina. Los mecanismos por los que las esponjas procesan el Si disuelto en el agua de mar para producir sus esqueletos s\u00edlice biog\u00e9nica est\u00e1n poco conocidos, aun siendo considerados una herramienta de notable inter\u00e9s para el desarrollo de nuevas aplicaciones en ciencia y tecnolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>Para poder explotar todas estas potencialidades interesantes, necesitamos resolver aspectos cruciales de la biolog\u00eda, ecolog\u00eda y propiedades de la s\u00edlice de esponjas. Los objetivos espec\u00edficos del proyecto son: 1) Resolver pasos clave en el proceso celular de elaboraci\u00f3n de s\u00edlice por esponjas que permanecen desconocidos; 2) Determinar los factores ambientales que regulan aspectos moleculares y citol\u00f3gicos de la producci\u00f3n de s\u00edlice y modelar sus efectos, buscando un futuro control biotecnol\u00f3gico; 3) Investigar algunas propiedades de la s\u00edlice (e.e., resistencia a la disoluci\u00f3n) explorando su potencial aplicabilidad; 4) Determinar los principales factores de variabilidad en el fraccionamiento isot\u00f3pico durante la elaboraci\u00f3n de la s\u00edlice por las esponjas, a fin de refinar el uso de is\u00f3topos estables de Si y O como herramientas ecol\u00f3gicas y paleontol\u00f3gicas; y 5) Cuantificar la contribuci\u00f3n de las esponjas a algunos balances regionales de Silicio, un nutriente clave para la producci\u00f3n primaria del
