Laia Leria Florensa

My main field of interest is evolutionary genetics. During my PhD, I focused on studying the different processes that shape the genetic diversity of organisms, using freshwater planarians as a model, with a particular emphasis on the type of reproduction (sexual vs asexual), chromosomal evolution, and biogeographical history.
Currently, my research is focused on characterizing the genetic basis of silica skeleton formation in marine sponges, through the use of genomic data.

PROJECTS

SponBIODIV’s main goal is to establish a sponge diversity and distribution baseline knowledge, as well as delivering tools to improve management and conservation of sponges across the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
The research project studies the role of sponges in the marine silicon cycle, with emphasis on silicon production and turnover, and exploring possible biotechnological applications.
