Doctor of Biological Sciences (Ecology) from the University of Barcelona in 1984.
Ecology Professor at the University of Murcia from 1984 to 1991, Associate Professor from 1988 to 1991. Tenured Scientist at the CSIC since 1991. Member of the “Environmental Change Ecology Group” recognized by AGAUR. Researcher at the PN-Aigüestortes node of the LTER-Spain network. Member of the validation expert group for the citizen science project “AtrapaelTigre.”
My research focuses on studying the effects of Global Change on high-mountain river ecosystems in the Pyrenees and Mediterranean mountain ecosystems, considering potential restoration and bioremediation actions for mitigation, including the impacts of invasive species (fish) on the diversity and functioning of macroinvertebrate communities in Pyrenean rivers and lakes. Part of this research is dedicated to changes associated with climate change and the possible evolution of habitat availability and future distributions of both endemic species and communities, along with their functionality. My research has necessitated long-term monitoring of some aquatic ecosystems to differentiate interannual variability from long-term change trends in these ecosystems, as well as for some emblematic or vulnerable species.
I consider the training of new scientists and educators to be very important. I have participated in several doctoral programs (UB, UdG, UAM, UM), some of which I still collaborate with, and I have also participated in courses for training secondary school teachers in Catalonia. I have supervised 9 PhD theses and 14 Master’s and Bachelor’s theses, in addition to being a tutor for final degree projects and internships at companies. I am a founding member of the Iberian Limnology Association, and I belong to the Freshwater Biological Association, the North American Benthological Society, the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology (SIL), and the LTER-Aigüestortes Association.
Areas of interest:
- Global change in river ecosystems, biodiversity conservation of macroinvertebrates, effects of climate change on high-mountain ecosystems.
- Systematics and ecology of mayflies and stoneflies.
- Cyanotoxins in rivers, production, release, and interactions with benthic macroinvertebrate communities.
