My research focuses on river biogeochemistry, specifically on understanding how human activity affects the ability of rivers to process nutrients, primarily nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon. I am particularly interested in the biogeochemical processes associated with ammonia and nitrate, and how these are impacted by changes in their availability due to land-use alterations. In this context, human activity, especially in urban areas, can have significant effects on receiving rivers, primarily through point-source inputs from wastewater treatment plant effluents. In this line of research, I study how the activity of bacterial communities and plants can help improve the water quality of these effluents. This knowledge can be very useful in designing strategies to enhance the functioning and management of highly modified rivers.

PROJECTS

PRORISK's vision is to provide exceptional value by creating an innovative platform to train a network of early stage researchers (ESR) in the field of Environmental Risk Assessment (WAS).
In this project, we measure the anthropogenic impact on the rivers of high mountain national parks, investigate the response of river ecosystems to this impact, and evaluate management strategies to mitigate this impact.
Plastic pollution is one of the effects of global change that coexists in river ecosystems with other phenomena such as the alteration of Mediterranean rivers.
