The Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC) has published its 2025 Annual Report, presenting the results of a year characterised by the consolidation of its scientific activity, a strengthened international profile, a strong capacity to attract funding, and an extensive programme of knowledge transfer, communication and public engagement activities.

Throughout 2025, researchers affiliated with the centre published 111 scientific papers, 89% of which were published in open access, reinforcing CEAB’s commitment to the open dissemination of knowledge. Research carried out during the year also had a strong international dimension: 76% of publications involved institutions from other countries, with scientific collaborations spanning more than 60 countries worldwide.

The centre’s scientific activity was supported by 114 active research projects and grants, amounting to €18.4 million in funding. Of this total, €17.1 million came from externally funded competitive projects, mainly awarded through European, national and international funding schemes.

In terms of its human dimension, the centre employed 153 professionals at the end of 2025, 54% of whom were women. The workforce comprised research, technical, administrative and support staff, alongside a large community of early-career researchers. During 2025, CEAB hosted 89 research stays and scientific visits, exceeding the figures recorded the previous year and further strengthening its international character.

The year was also significant from an institutional perspective. The centre received the ASPIRA-CSIC “Sagrario Martínez Carrera” distinction, which recognises institutes with the potential to achieve the highest standards of scientific excellence and provides dedicated funding to support strategic development actions. In parallel, the Department of Ecology and Complexity was formally established, and the role of the new External Scientific Advisory Committee was further strengthened.

The year was also marked by intense activity in knowledge transfer, science communication and public outreach, reinforcing the connection between research and society. CEAB organised 27 public engagement and science culture activities, reaching an estimated audience of 15,585 people, as well as 102 educational activities involving 5,786 students from 67 schools. In the field of communication, the centre issued 60 press releases and continued to expand its digital presence, reaching nearly 9,800 followers across its social media channels.

Overall, these results reflect a year of scientific and institutional consolidation, continued internationalisation, and a stronger connection between research and society.

The year 2025 also marked the beginning of the centre’s 40th anniversary celebrations, an important milestone reached at a time of both quantitative and qualitative growth and of an increasing social impact of research.
