Laminaria rodriguezii and maërl bottom: study of important biological traits for habitat conservation with the collaboration of fishermen

LaMinorca

The main objective of the project is to expand basic knowledge regarding the biology and ecology of this species and its population in Menorca (Balearic Islands).

The LaMinorca project focuses on the study of marine forests dominated by Laminaria rodriguezii, a macroalga endemic to the Mediterranean.

The project’s main objective is to expand basic knowledge about the biology and ecology of this species and its population in the Menorca Channel, as it is the main structural species of the maerl beds.

The methodology combines collaboration with fishermen in sample collection and laboratory experiments under different environmental conditions, along with outreach activities.

The results will contribute to the conservation and management of these habitats, highlighting the importance of collaboration between science and the fishing sector.
